Paver Walkways are Both Beautiful and Functional
A paver walkway might be exactly what your NH property needs to boost its aesthetic appeal. Pavers come in many different shapes, sizes, and colors. Pavers can be arranged in a variety of patterns. Walkways designed with pavers can easily be customized to fit your desired style for your landscape. You can choose from a huge array of design options allowing for lots of creative expression. All while installing a functional, durable pathway that stands up to New Hampshire’s varied weather.
Pavers vs. Asphalt vs. Concrete Walkways
Pavers walkways are easily the most attractive material choice. Asphalt and concrete are functional but don’t win many points for beauty. Pavers are also more durable than both asphalt and concrete. When pavers are still holding strong after 30 years, asphalt walkways require a complete re-build about every 15 years. Once concrete cracks it’s impossible to fix without a jackhammer. New Hampshire’s freeze thaw cycle encourages concrete to crack. As with any construction project, best accepted practices are key to a long life without problems. Paver walkways must be tamped over hard pack, must drain well, and must account for the property grading and drainage. Properly installed paver walkways are more beautiful, last longer and require less maintenance than asphalt and concrete walkways.
Laying a Firm Walkway Foundation
An uneven surface will cause a walkway to buckle, heave and break apart. About 8 inches of well tamped hard pack is essential to a long walkway lifetime. The walkway must be level regardless of the property grading. The hard pack also helps the walkway drain. For very wet areas we install a permeable paver system that allows water to percolate back into the ground.
Harsh Weather Walkways Should Never Use Grout
Grout is not used to connect pavers together. Grout would not withstand harsh weather changes. Polymetric sand is a natural cohesive agent impervious to freezing and hot temperatures.
New Hampshire Walkway Weather Challanges
In New Hampshire we have sunshine, snow, heat, cold, rain and ice. Proper installation and the right materials are essential to a 30-year walkway lifetime. We choose only walkway materials that can easily stand up to New Hampshire weather. Your walkway paver choices are beautiful but also weather resistant capable of handling our sub-freezing winters and 90 degree summers. For areas where rainwater collects we offer you a permeable pavement system that drains and percolates rain water back into the water table.
Walkways can be straight, angled and curved. Design will depend on your goals for the walkway, the ground material, water patterns and existing features like trees, shrubs and gardens.
Incorporating the Environment
Curving your walkway around trees and other vegetation or objects provides a visually-interesting appearance. Yet a walkway still needs to efficiently take you from Point A to Point B. The best walkway designs incorporate both form and function.
Determining Walkway Dimensions
Walkway width is usually measured at enough width for two people to pass one another. But many walkways are single file, such as those going from the front to the back of a house. Width is important when traffic is a consideration, but it’s OK to go narrower when the path is usually only used by one person at a time.
